Veterans, active duty military, and family members are invited to learn about benefits and services available to them.

Every week representatives from Region 5 of the Western Tidewater Community Services Board will visit the library and consult with Veterans, active duty military members, and their families on a first-come, first-served basis. Please come in and learn about benefits and services available to you. If you can't come in when the representatives are here, please visit region-five.org or call (757)925-2484.

This program is made possible by the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant. Please learn more about the grant and the memory of SSG Fox at https://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/ssgfox-grants/

We are grateful for receiving permission to share this testimonial from a participant, a US Army Veteran:

"For the last four months I became homeless after suffering a stroke in 2023. Before then, I frequent this library to check out DVDs and getting to know the staff on a regular basis. Talking to the security guard and venting my issues, he then introduced me to a program just for vets to help them with problems that I'm having at the time.

Thus meeting Mr. Chester Boothe the facilitator for the program. For the pass few months, Mr Boothe has helped me to seek the veterans affairs benefits to first get me off the streets of being homeless to a hotel for 60 days to get back my hygiene practices which enabled me to conduct myself confidently when dealing with different upcoming agencies, which I have an still doing.

Currently I'm now living in a boarding house for veterans, registered and now have a VA membership ID card for an array of services the VA is offering, also I've filied for SSDI which once approved I will finally receive some type of income to supplement my lack of ability to work due to my stroke which will get me the determination to become more self-sufficient again.

Now you see how important this program is to me and anyone else suffering from life as I was. Spiritually if you don't believe in God and put Him above all things, life will be more difficult. I salute Mr Boothe and the program for all they have done for me and I'm happy again what's a better perspective on my future."
